Walgun and Cape Byron: dual name, short and respectful
Walgun (Bundjalung / Arakwal, often glossed as “shoulder”) / Cape Byron. This is a State Conservation Area, not a national park. We do not invent culture.

Best for: Readers who searched Byron Bay lighthouse and need the official place name
Unofficial guide — always verify track conditions, closures, fees and safety with NSW National Parks. Place photos are Brett Darby Photography (used with permission) or Wikimedia Commons / CC where credited — not official NPWS imagery and not live conditions.
Some stay, tour and gear links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Parking fees and official NPWS cottage bookings are never affiliated.

Official NPWS name: Walgun Cape Byron State Conservation Area. Walgun is Bundjalung / Arakwal, often glossed as “shoulder.” Cape Byron is the name most search engines still use. Dual naming is how the place is titled — not a marketing layer we added.
This site does not invent ceremony or stories, and it does not speak for Traditional Owners. For cultural wording, use the official SCA page and Arakwal Corporation.
People still type “Byron Bay national park” and “Byron Bay national park camping.” Those searches describe a different kind of place. There is no conventional campground here. Heritage cottages are official NPWS bookings only.
One place, two names
Walgun / Cape Byron is the dual name for this headland. The lighthouse, the most-easterly marker and the 3.7 km loop sit in the State Conservation Area. We use both names because visitors search one and the official title uses both.
We acknowledge Arakwal / Bundjalung people. Acknowledgement lives on About and Visit. It is not filler for the header.
What this reserve is not
It is not Arakwal National Park. It is not Cape Byron Marine Park. Those are other reserves with other managers and other rules. Mixing them is how people invent walks, camping and fishing tables that do not apply here.
It is not a 3-day wilderness. Byron Bay town is the food, fuel and medical reset. Overnight is town beds or official NPWS cottages.
What we will not write
No invented Dreaming retellings. No fake “welcome to country” copy. Cultural tours belong with licensed operators and Traditional Owners. If a tour is listed on the official SCA page, that is the starting point — then our Tours hub for optional commercial listings.
The Pass midden is recorded by NPWS as a conservation program with Aboriginal community partners. Look, do not disturb, do not invent a story on the track.
Camping searches
There is no conventional campground on this SCA. Assistant Lighthouse Keepers’ Cottages and other NPWS stays book only on official channels. This site never affiliates them.
Cottage beach access tracks between Mildenhall and Imeson, and from Partridge, were closed until further notice for an erosion drop-off when we checked 14 September 2026. Confirm live on Stay before you book a cottage as a beach stay.
