Lighthouse lawn car park full: start at The Pass or Wategos

When the 1-hour lighthouse car park is full or circling, use The Pass, Wategos or Bawaii — or walk from town. A named Plan B, not verge parking.

NPWS calls the grass pad under Cape Byron Lighthouse the “lawn.” It is a car park — one hour per vehicle per calendar day, including annual-pass holders (confirm live). When that lot is full, this page is Plan B.

A full lighthouse car park is not a personal failure. It is a normal Saturday. Plan B is a named start — The Pass, Wategos, Bawaii / Captain Cook Lookout, or walk from town — not a creative parking job on vegetation.

Those nodes still have a clock if you drove ($5 an hour when we checked 14 September 2026 — confirm live). Only walk-in skips the vehicle charge.

Follow signs and NPWS / local parking rules for your date. Ten minutes of hunting, then switch. Circling wastes the hour you would have spent looking at the ocean.

Named starts

The Pass: loop start, surf context, hourly parking. Wategos: picnic and beach node, and a walk toward the lighthouse. Bawaii / Captain Cook Lookout: eastern lookout and another legal loop start — also the better whale wait if you drove.

All of those still have a parking clock if you drove. Only walk-in has no hourly vehicle charge. Precinct notes: The Pass & Wategos, and Bawaii / Tallow.

If you only had an hour

Skip the cape and keep Byron town. Come back on foot at a quieter time. Illegal parking is not how the headland works.

If you already paid in the lighthouse car park and it is simply slow, do the precinct and leave on the clock. Do not “just start the loop.”

Cottage beach cuts are not a shortcut

NPWS safety alert (checked 14 September 2026): erosion drop-off in the foredune. Beach access tracks between Mildenhall Cottage and Imeson Cottage, and from Partridge Cottage, are closed until further notice.

Clarkes Beach access is via Brooke Drive and The Pass, or Bawaii (Captain Cook). Confirm live. Do not improvise a closed cut because the lighthouse car park is full.

The ten-minute rule

If signed lots are full, leave the hunt. Ten minutes, then The Pass, Wategos, Bawaii, or reverse to town. Named Plan B, not a verge.

Deep parking rules: 1-hour lighthouse car park article. Timed Plan B: loop + lighthouse itinerary from The Pass or Bawaii.

FAQ

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Can I wait in the road for a space in the lighthouse car park?

No. Use a named Plan B or leave. Circling wastes the hour you would have spent looking at the ocean.

Is The Pass free because it is not the lighthouse car park?

No. NPWS lists $5 per hour at The Pass, Cosy Corner and Bawaii. Confirm live. Walk-in skips the vehicle charge.

Can I use the cottage beach tracks as a back way?

No. Those cuts were closed until further notice for an erosion drop-off when we checked 14 September 2026. Use Brooke Drive and The Pass, or Bawaii, for Clarkes Beach. Confirm live.
