Walk from Byron vs drive to the lighthouse
Walk-in skips vehicle fees and lets you linger. Drive-in buys a one-hour stay in the lighthouse car park. How to choose before you leave the last coffee.

Best for: First-timers still picturing a long national-park drive to a remote trailhead

Byron Bay town is about two kilometres from the lighthouse precinct. People search “Cape Byron lighthouse” more than “Walgun.” The decision that actually matters is walk versus drive — not a three-day itinerary.
Walk or cycle and you skip the vehicle charge. Drive to the lighthouse car park and you buy one hour, even with an annual pass. Drive to The Pass or Bawaii and you pay by the hour on a clock you can actually sit through.
This is unofficial. Confirm alerts and your own fitness for the Lighthouse Road climb. After rain, steps get slick. Wind on the lighthouse precinct is colder than town streets.
How far, and what the climb feels like
Treat it as a couple of kilometres with a real climb on Lighthouse Road — not a flat boardwalk. Confirm your route on a current map. We have not clocked a field time for this URL; your pace, heat and crowds will change it.
Carry water even if it looks like a town stroll. The lighthouse car park and grassland have little shade. A headlamp matters if you are aiming at first light.
When walking wins
You want sunrise, a whale-season wait, or the full 3.7 km loop. You have water and shoes. You do not want a parking argument in the group.
Walking also wins when the lighthouse car park is already a queue. The walk-in is Plan A for lingering, not the backup you invent after the machine has already eaten the hour.
When driving is honest

Mobility limits, little kids who will only do the precinct, or a tight clock where 60 minutes of lighthouse is the whole product. Pay, look, leave. That is still a successful visit.
If you need more than an hour with a car, do not use the lighthouse car park. Use The Pass, Cosy Corner or Bawaii ($5/hour — confirm live) or skip the drive.
The middle option: $5 nodes
The Pass, Cosy Corner and Bawaii are the legal in-between. They still have a clock if you drove. They are the right start for a loop you cannot walk from town, and they are named Plan B when the lighthouse car park is full.
Budget the hours the car will sit. A 1–3 hour loop plus buffer is not a $5 experiment. Details live on the article for when the lighthouse car park is full and the loop trail page.
Before you leave the last coffee
Say the choice out loud: walk-in, 1-hour lighthouse car park, or $5 node. Check alerts. If anyone in the group will not walk uphill in the dark, do not pick the sunrise itinerary. If anyone wants the loop, do not pick the lighthouse-car-park ticket.
Timed versions: sunrise walk-in, 1-hour lighthouse car park, loop + lighthouse. Parking table: Plan your visit.
FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
How far is the walk from town?
Treat it as a couple of kilometres with a real climb on Lighthouse Road. Confirm your route on a current map. It is not a clocked field time.
Does cycling skip the fee too?
NPWS treats walk-in and cycle-in as skipping the hourly vehicle charge. Lights, a lock and the climb are still your problem. Confirm live wording.
Can I drive some of the group and walk the rest?
The lighthouse-car-park hour still applies to the car. Split groups often fail the reverse. Pick one plan: walk-in together, or precinct-only for the car.
