Itineraries
Guide updated · verify NSW National Parks the morning you go
These plans are built for a crowded lighthouse headland next to Byron Bay town — 1-hour cap on the lighthouse car park (including annual-pass holders), walk-from-town, $5 hourly nodes, café and cottage-cut alerts — not a 3-day national-park checklist. Pick the plan that matches the parking clock, then open it for a full timeline, packing notes and what to skip. Print from any plan page, or grab the free day planner anytime.
Every itinerary defers to NSW National Parks for fees, hours, track status and alerts. This is an NPWS State Conservation Area, not a national park. Overnight is Byron town or official NPWS cottages — never a conventional campground here. No hinterland waterfall farm on day 2.
Still deciding walk-in vs drive? Start with Plan your visit for the parking table, then come back here for timed skeletons.
Which plan fits you?
- Sunrise walk-in — linger at the marker without the lighthouse car-park pay machine. Dark start and a climb are the cost.
- Lawn 1-hour — drivers who accept the NPWS cap (including annual pass). Postcard, leave. No loop.
- Loop + lighthouse — half day. Walk-in or $5 hourly node. 3.7 km Grade 3 done properly.
- Whale-season half day — clifftop wait with binoculars. Sightings are a bonus. Same parking clock.
If two plans both “sound good,” pick the shorter one. You can always walk more on the ground; you cannot invent a second hour in the lighthouse car park.

2–3 hours doors-to-doors in Byron
Sunrise walk-in from town
Best for: People who will not fight the lighthouse car-park pay machine at dawn
Walk or cycle from Byron to the lighthouse for first light. No vehicle fee. No 1-hour cap. Stairs and a dark start are the cost. Linger at the marker; reverse to town or continue a loop section only if legs allow.

60 minutes on the precinct (plus town time)
One hour at the lighthouse
Best for: Drivers who accept the NPWS 1-hour cap
Pay, lighthouse, most-easterly marker, Information Centre if open, leave. Do not start the 3.7 km loop on this ticket. Success is one clear lighthouse stop — not all-day parking with an annual pass.

Half day (about 2–4 hours on the headland)
Loop + lighthouse (half day)
Best for: Walkers who want the 3.7 km Grade 3 circuit done properly
Walk-from-town or park at The Pass / Bawaii on an hourly clock you can actually afford. Do the signed 3.7 km loop. Lighthouse is a stop, not the whole day. Do not drive to the lighthouse car park for this shape.

Half day on the headland
Whale-season half day
Best for: May–November whale window (confirm Wild About Whales)
Clifftop lookouts and binoculars. Same parking clock. Whales are a bonus, not a booking. Walk-in or a $5 hourly node — do not burn the 1-hour lighthouse-car-park ticket while you wait for a breach.
