One hour at the lighthouse
Best for: Drivers who accept the NPWS 1-hour cap
Guide updated · verify NSW National Parks the morning you go
Pay, lighthouse, most-easterly marker, Information Centre if open, leave. Do not start the 3.7 km loop on this ticket. Success is one clear lighthouse stop — not all-day parking with an annual pass.

NPWS (re-checked 14 Sep 2026): $10 per vehicle per hour in the lighthouse car park, $4/hour motorcycles, maximum 1 hour per vehicle per calendar day including all NPWS annual passholders. Confirm live. Coach entry is a separate table on the official page.
This is the “we have a car and we accept the sample ticket” plan. Success is one clear lighthouse stop. Failure is treating the annual pass as all-day parking, arguing with the machine, or starting the loop on that ticket.
Lawn 8am–sunset. Museum 10am–4pm. Information Centre 9.30am–4.30pm daily, closed Christmas Day, 199 Lighthouse Road. If you need more than 60 minutes, walk in (sunrise plan) or start at The Pass / Bawaii on a $5 hourly clock (loop plan).
If the lighthouse car park is full, do not verge-park. Named Plan B is The Pass, Wategos or Bawaii — or skip the drive. See the article for when the lighthouse car park is full.
Track status, weather and closures change — verify on NSW National Parks before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.
Timeline
Before you leave town
Decide if 60 minutes is enough
Say it out loud. If not, switch to walk-in or The Pass / Bawaii ($5/hour — confirm live). Screenshot the official visitor-notes fee table. Do not discover the cap on the pay machine.
0–10 min
Pay and note the clock
Tap-and-pay machines; cash/card also at the Information Centre when open. Start the hour when you park, not when you finish photos. Valuables not left visible.
10–50 min
Lighthouse, marker, lookout (main event)
Work the precinct properly — marker, tower look, Information Centre if open. Stay off cliff edges. Museum 10am–4pm. Guided tours: phone 02 6639 8300 — limited days, not this 60-minute skeleton.
50–60 min
Leave the lighthouse car park
Do not “just start the loop.” Walkers who arrived on foot can stay. Vehicles leave. Town food is the reset — Cape Café closed-area listing from 31 May 2026 (confirm live).
If the lot is full
Execute Plan B in ten minutes
Cap the hunt. The Pass, Wategos or Bawaii — or reverse to town. Do not invent a verge. Deep guide: Plan B when the lighthouse car park is full article.

Parking & access tips
- 1-hour cap includes annual-pass holders — confirm live.
- If the lighthouse car park is full, do not verge-park. Use The Pass / Bawaii or walk from town.
- Coach tables are separate — your car is not a coach.
- A second vehicle visit the same calendar day may still hit the 1-hour wording — confirm live NPWS.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Anyone who wanted a two-hour loop with a car on the lighthouse car park
- Waiting for whales on this ticket (use the whale-season plan + $5 node or walk-in)
- A café lunch at the lighthouse precinct around the closed listing
- Hinterland after this “because we still have the afternoon”
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- Drivers who will obey the 1-hour cap
- First-timers who only need the postcard
- Groups with a reverse clock back to town or the airport
- People who will switch plans if the lot is full
Decision gates (say them out loud)
- If 60 minutes is not enough: walk in or $5 node — do not start this plan
- If the lot is full: Plan B in ten minutes, not illegal parking
- If someone wants the loop: switch to loop + lighthouse, do not hybrid on this ticket
- If the café is listed closed: town food, not a sit-and-wait
What success looks like
- One clear lighthouse stop inside the hour
- No parking argument
- No invented loop
- Notes for next time: walk-in sunrise, or a half-day from The Pass

Other plans on this SCA
Morning and half-day only. If two plans both sound good, pick the shorter one — you cannot invent a second hour in the lighthouse car park.
- 2–3 hours doors-to-doors in ByronSunrise walk-in from townWalk or cycle from Byron to the lighthouse for first light. No vehicle fee. No 1-hour cap. Stairs and a dark start are the cost. Linger at the marker; reverse to town or continue a loop section only if legs allow.
- Half day (about 2–4 hours on the headland)Loop + lighthouse (half day)Walk-from-town or park at The Pass / Bawaii on an hourly clock you can actually afford. Do the signed 3.7 km loop. Lighthouse is a stop, not the whole day. Do not drive to the lighthouse car park for this shape.
- Half day on the headlandWhale-season half dayClifftop lookouts and binoculars. Same parking clock. Whales are a bonus, not a booking. Walk-in or a $5 hourly node — do not burn the 1-hour lighthouse-car-park ticket while you wait for a breach.
