Half day (about 2–4 hours on the headland)

Loop + lighthouse (half day)

Best for: Walkers who want the 3.7 km Grade 3 circuit done properly

Walk-from-town or park at The Pass / Bawaii on an hourly clock you can actually afford. Do the signed 3.7 km loop. Lighthouse is a stop, not the whole day. Do not drive to the lighthouse car park for this shape.

NPWS: 3.7 km loop, Grade 3, 1–3 hours suggested (they also say you will want a good two hours). Accessibility listed as hard on the official page in the terrain sense. Water, hat, sunscreen. Stick to the track. Stay off cliff edges.

Do not drive to the lighthouse car park for this shape. The 1-hour cap will lose, including if you hold an annual pass. Walk-in skips the vehicle charge. The Pass / Cosy Corner / Bawaii: $5/hour (confirm live) — budget the hours.

Multiple access points. Reverse if anyone is done. Palm Valley Currenbah is a separate signed walk — not this loop under another name. Cottage beach cuts were on a current erosion alert (14 Sep 2026) — that is not this clifftop loop, and you still do not improvise a closed cut.

Cape Café closed-area listing from 31 May 2026 — confirm live. Carry water. Byron town is the food reset. Overnight remains town or official cottages. No hinterland stack after this.

Track status, weather and closures change — verify on NSW National Parks before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.

Timeline

  1. Night before

    Alerts + start decision

Check the walking-track page and SCA alerts. The signed loop had no current track-specific alerts on 14 Sep 2026 — still re-check. Decide: walk-from-town vs The Pass vs Bawaii. Screenshot fees. Pack water, hat, grip shoes.

  2. Start

Town walk-in or The Pass / Bawaii

Hourly $5 nodes if you drove — confirm live. Budget walking time plus buffer. If the node is full, do not verge-park. Reverse to town or skip. Do not “just pop up to the lighthouse car park” for a second ticket the same day without reading live NPWS wording.

  3. Loop

    Rainforest, beach, grassland, clifftop

Bangalow palms, burrawangs, steps, sand, exposure. Multiple access points. Reverse if anyone is done. After rain, stairs get slick. Shared use with other visitors. This is next to town, not a remote multi-day.

  4. Lighthouse

Marker and precinct as a stop

If you walked in, linger. If you drove a $5 node, your reverse is that machine. Do not add a café sit as a promise. Information Centre 9.30am–4.30pm, closed Christmas Day.

  5. Return

Same node you can legally use

Town, The Pass, or Bawaii — not a mystery third car. Town food. Notes for next time. Do not invent Nightcap or a waterfall farm as “day 2 of this park.”

Packing

  • Water + sun hat
  • Grip shoes
  • Wind layer
  • Snacks that survive a warm bag
  • Phone offline map / alerts screenshot
  • Simple first aid + blister care

Parking & access tips

  • Walk-in is the clean plan.
  • Driving: hourly at The Pass / Bawaii, not the 1-hour lighthouse car park.
  • Budget hours for a 1–3 hour loop plus buffer if the car sits.
  • If both the lighthouse car park and The Pass are full, skip the drive — do not invent a verge.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Pram-only groups (try precinct paths or confirm Palm Valley live)
  • Anyone stacking hinterland waterfalls after this
  • Starting on a 1-hour lighthouse-car-park ticket
  • A guaranteed café lunch at the lighthouse precinct

Extra tips

Who this plan is for

  • Walkers who want the signature 3.7 km circuit done properly
  • Groups who will match start to parking clock
  • People happy to reverse if energy fails
  • Not a first product for pram-only or cliff-nervous mixed groups in wind

Decision gates (say them out loud)

  • If you parked in the lighthouse car park: this is the wrong plan — switch to 1-hour
  • If NPWS shows a track-specific alert: shrink or cancel
  • If anyone is done at the lighthouse: reverse — the loop is optional from there
  • If heat or UV is ugly: more water, earlier start, or precinct-only

What success looks like

  • Signed loop (or an honest section) without a parking overstay
  • Lighthouse as a stop, not a café promise
  • Everyone back at a legal node
  • No hinterland stack

Morning and half-day only. If two plans both sound good, pick the shorter one — you cannot invent a second hour in the lighthouse car park.
