Park overview

Walgun Cape Byron is an NPWS State Conservation Area on a crowded lighthouse headland next to Byron Bay town — not a World Heritage plateau and not a 3-day national park. Dual name: Walgun (Bundjalung / Arakwal, often glossed as “shoulder”) / Cape Byron. Most visitors come for the lighthouse, the most-easterly marker, and the 3.7 km Grade 3 loop. This hub is how you pick a start that matches the parking clock, then open a deeper precinct guide.

Always verify live conditions on the official SCA page and alerts. This site is independent and unofficial. Not walked.

How to choose a precinct

First visit, want the postcard: lighthouse precinct — marker, lawn car park, Information Centre. Drive it only if 60 minutes is enough. Walk or cycle from town if you want to linger.

Doing the 3.7 km loop: do not start on a 1-hour lighthouse-car-park ticket. Walk-in, or park at The Pass / Cosy Corner / Bawaii on an hourly clock you can actually sit through ($5/hour — confirm live).

Lighthouse car park full or circling: named Plan B is The Pass, Wategos, or Bawaii / Captain Cook Lookout — not a verge. See the article for when the lighthouse car park is full.

Whale-season lookout: clifftops from Bawaii or the precinct if you walked in. Waiting for a breach is how people overstay the lighthouse-car-park hour.

Overnight: Byron Bay town, or official NPWS cottages only. No conventional campground. Cottage beach cuts are on a current erosion alert — confirm live on Stay.

Recommended order: decide walk-in vs drive → pick one start → check alerts (café, cottage beach tracks) → lighthouse and/or one honest loop → reverse to Byron. Do not stack hinterland waterfalls after this.

Geography in plain English

This is a small coastal headland immediately east of Byron Bay. Lighthouse Road is the climb from town (~2 km). The lighthouse lawn car park sits under the working lighthouse at the most easterly point of mainland Australia. The signed loop threads rainforest (bangalow / burrawang), grassland, beach and clifftop between several pay nodes: lighthouse lawn car park, The Pass / Cosy Corner, Wategos, Bawaii / Captain Cook Lookout.

Adjacent reserves are not this site: Arakwal National Park and Cape Byron Marine Park. Town fuel, food and medical are in Byron Bay — not in the lighthouse car park. Heritage keepers’ cottages are inside the SCA and book only on NPWS. Cape Byron Lighthouse Café is a separate listing and was on the closed-area alerts list from 31 May 2026 (confirm live).

We acknowledge Arakwal / Bundjalung people. This site does not speak for Traditional Owners or NPWS. Point to the official SCA page and Arakwal Corporation for cultural wording.
