Walgun Cape ByronUnofficial operator’s manual

Lighthouse precinct

Cape Byron Lighthouse, lighthouse car park, most-easterly marker, Information Centre and heritage cottages. The 1-hour vehicle cap is the operator fact — walk-in if you want to linger.

  • Best for: Postcard lighthouse, marker, museum hours, a tight clock if you drove
  • Time: 60–90 min precinct; longer only if you walked in
  • Short drive from Byron town via Lighthouse Road — or walk/cycle and skip vehicle fees. Lawn $10/hour cars, $4/hour motorcycles, max 1 hour/day including annual-pass holders (confirm live).

Why this is the default first stop

If someone searches “Cape Byron lighthouse” or “Byron Bay lighthouse,” they mean this precinct: the white tower, the most-easterly marker, the lighthouse car park, and the Information Centre. That concentration is the gift and the problem — you get the postcard, and you share it with every other morning that left town at the same time.

Treat the precinct as orientation, not a checklist to finish. Nail the marker and a look at the tower in good light, decide honestly whether you walked in (linger) or drove (leave on the clock), then either reverse to Byron or continue the loop from a legal start.

A successful first visit is one clear lighthouse stop. Failure is stacking hinterland waterfalls, Nightcap, or a café lunch you assumed would be in the lighthouse car park. Pair this precinct with the 1-hour itinerary if you drove, or the sunrise walk-in itinerary if you did not.

Walgun / Cape Byron — one place

Walgun is the Bundjalung / Arakwal name (often glossed as “shoulder”). Cape Byron is the name most search engines still use. Official NPWS title: Walgun Cape Byron State Conservation Area. Dual naming is the product; “Cape Byron National Park” is a visitor error this guide will not repeat.

It sits next to Arakwal National Park and Cape Byron Marine Park. Those are other reserves with other managers and other rules. This guide does not build them. We acknowledge Arakwal / Bundjalung people and do not invent ceremony or speak for Traditional Owners.

Cultural wording belongs on the official SCA page and with Arakwal Corporation. Licensed cultural tours, when they exist, live on the official page and on our Tours hub — official-before-money. Do not treat a lookout selfie as a cultural briefing.

The parking clock is the product

NPWS (re-checked 14 Sep 2026): lighthouse lawn car park and Information Centre $10 per vehicle per hour / $4 motorcycles; maximum 1 hour per vehicle per calendar day, including all NPWS annual passholders. Coach entry is a separate table on the official page. Dollars change — screenshot the official visitor notes the morning you go.

Walk-in or cycle-in from Byron skips the vehicle charge. Driving is a sample ticket: pay, photograph, Information Centre if open, leave. Success is one clear lighthouse stop. Failure is treating the annual pass as all-day parking, arguing with the machine, or starting the 3.7 km loop on that ticket.

If the lighthouse car park is already a queue, do not invent a verge. Named Plan B is The Pass, Wategos, or Bawaii / Captain Cook Lookout — all hourly, all legal, all on this hub. Deep guide: the 1-hour parking-rule article. Parking table: Plan your visit.

Hours, museum, café — three different clocks

SCA listed Open, all hours unless closed for weather or fire. Lighthouse lawn car park 8am–sunset. Maritime Museum 10am–4pm daily. Information Centre 9.30am–4.30pm daily, closed Christmas Day. Opening before 8am for events or disabled access is a prior-notice NPWS Byron arrangement (02 6639 8300 during business hours).

Guided lighthouse / museum tours: limited days — phone the Information Centre. We do not publish a mailbox. The museum in the former keeper’s office is not the same product as a climb of the tower; do not assume every outbuilding is a public tour.

Cape Byron Lighthouse Café is a separate listing. NPWS had it on the closed-area alerts list from 31 May 2026 (listing also shows an apply-to window through 26 Feb 2027). Recheck alerts. Carry water. Do not plan lunch at the lighthouse precinct around that listing — Byron town is the food reset.

Cottages — official only, and a beach-cut alert

Assistant Lighthouse Keepers’ Cottages and other NPWS stays on this SCA are official bookings only. This site never affiliates them. They are not a Booking.com, Stayz, or Airbnb product, and a town hotel is not “the lighthouse cottages.”

NPWS safety alert (checked 14 Sep 2026): erosion drop-off in the foredune. Beach access tracks between Mildenhall Cottage and Imeson Cottage, and from Partridge Cottage, are closed until further notice. Clarkes Beach access is via Brooke Drive and The Pass, or Bawaii (Captain Cook). Confirm live before you book a cottage for a beach stay.

Most visitors sleep in Byron Bay town. There is no conventional campground on this SCA. Stay hub on this site is the cottage/official-vs-town decision — not a second booking engine.

Highlights at a glance

  • Cape Byron Lighthouse on the most easterly point of mainland Australia
  • Walgun Cape Byron Information Centre — 199 Lighthouse Road
  • Maritime Museum in the former keeper’s office (10am–4pm daily — confirm live)
  • Heritage keepers’ cottages — official NPWS booking only
  • Start / finish for the 3.7 km loop if you did not drive the 1-hour ticket

Practical tips

  • Walk from town if you want more than an hour — Lighthouse Road is the obvious climb; allow water and extra time.
  • Screenshot the parking rule; arguing with the machine wastes the hour.
  • Information Centre 9.30am–4.30pm daily, closed Christmas Day, 199 Lighthouse Road, 02 6639 8300.
  • Wind and UV on the lighthouse precinct — hat and a layer even in a town T-shirt morning.
  • Stay off cliff edges for whale or Instagram zooms.
  • Check NPWS alerts the morning you go (café, cottage beach tracks, weather/fire).
  • If the lighthouse car park is full, open The Pass / Wategos or Bawaii precinct — not a verge.

Facilities & services

  • Information Centre and gift shop hours (confirm live)
  • Maritime Museum 10am–4pm (confirm live)
  • Pay machines on the lighthouse car park; cash/card also at the Information Centre when open
  • Toilets — confirm on-site; do not assume every outbuilding is public
  • Heritage cottages — NPWS booking only
  • Cape Byron Lighthouse Café — separate listing; closed-area alert from 31 May 2026 (confirm live)

Confirm toilets, parking and open facilities on the day via official sources and on-site signage.

FAQ — Lawn & lighthouse

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Does an NPWS annual pass cover all-day parking here?

No. NPWS says the 1-hour maximum per vehicle per calendar day on the lighthouse lawn car park includes annual passholders. Confirm live on the official SCA page. Walk-in or cycle-in from Byron avoids the vehicle charge. Deep guide: parking-one-hour-rule article.

How long do I need at the precinct?

If you drove: 60 minutes is the honest product — marker, tower look, Information Centre if open, leave. If you walked in: 60–90 minutes for marker, tower and Information Centre is still a complete visit; add the 3.7 km loop only with time and legs. Trying to “do the loop plus hinterland” after a lighthouse-car-park ticket is how the day fails.

Can I camp in the lighthouse car park?

No conventional campground. Heritage keepers’ cottages are official NPWS bookings only — never an affiliate stay on this site. Most visitors sleep in Byron Bay town. Cottage beach cuts were on a current erosion alert when we checked 14 Sep 2026 — confirm live on Stay.

Is the café open?

NPWS listed Cape Byron Lighthouse Café closed until further notice from 31 May 2026 (listing also shows an apply-to window through 26 Feb 2027). Recheck alerts. Do not plan lunch at the lighthouse precinct around that listing. Byron town is the food reset.

Can I see the lighthouse without the full loop?

Yes. Precinct paths are the short-access option. The 3.7 km Grade 3 loop is a separate product with several starts (lighthouse car park only if you did not drive the 1-hour ticket; otherwise The Pass, Wategos or Bawaii, or walk-from-town).

Is this a national park?

No. Walgun Cape Byron is an NPWS State Conservation Area. Adjacent Arakwal National Park and Cape Byron Marine Park are other reserves. This guide does not treat them as the same product.

Other precincts on this SCA

Same small headland, different clock. Open the start that matches parking — do not treat adjacent Arakwal National Park or the Marine Park as this reserve.
