Bawaii & Tallow side

Captain Cook Lookout / Bawaii rest area ($5/hour, confirm live) and Tallow Beach as a nearby swim/surf name — not a second park. Eastern-side start for the loop and the better whale wait if you drove.

  • Best for: Captain Cook Lookout start, whale-season clifftop, overflow when the lighthouse car park is ugly
  • Time: Lookout stop 30–60 min; loop add-on 1–3 hours
  • Bawaii rest area: $5 per vehicle/motorcycle per hour (confirm live).

Why come to the east side

Bawaii / Captain Cook Lookout is the eastern lookout and a legal loop start when the lighthouse lawn car park is already a zoo. Pay the $5/hour node or walk in. It is overflow and a whale-season clifftop — not a secret second park.

Tallow Beach appears on NPWS “also see” lists. That does not make this a Tallow guidebook. Swim only if patrolled. No conventional campground on this SCA. Town stays and official cottages are the overnight products — see Stay.

A 30–60 minute lookout stop is a complete product. Adding the signed loop toward the lighthouse is a 1–3 hour add-on. Do not treat this node as “free all-day because it is not the lighthouse car park.”

Overflow, not a verge

When the lighthouse car park is full, Bawaii is a named start. Confirm the pay machine and signed trackhead. Do not park on vegetation or block access. If this car park is full too, walk from town or skip the drive — do not invent a shoulder.

If you walk the loop from here, reverse to this node or continue to a start you can legally finish at. The 1-hour lighthouse-car-park rule still applies if you later try to “just pop up” in a second vehicle visit the same calendar day — confirm live NPWS wording.

Pair with the Plan B when the lighthouse car park is full article and the loop trail page. The parking table lives on Plan your visit. Dollars and hours change.

Whale-season lookout (not a guarantee)

NPWS points whale watching at Wild About Whales (often described as May–November). The Information Centre page also says May to October. Confirm current notes. Sightings are a bonus, not a booking.

Binoculars help. Stay off cliff edges for a zoom. Licensed boats are a different product on Tours. If you drove to wait, this $5 hourly node (or a walk-in) beats burning the lighthouse-car-park hour while you hope for a breach.

Deep notes: whale-season practical article and the whale-season half-day itinerary. Do not stack a lighthouse-car-park ticket plus a clifftop wait plus hinterland waterfalls on the same clock.

Clarkes Beach via Bawaii while cottage cuts are closed

NPWS erosion alert (checked 14 Sep 2026): cottage beach tracks between Mildenhall and Imeson, and from Partridge, are closed until further notice because of a dangerous foredune drop-off.

Access to Clarkes Beach is via Brooke Drive and The Pass, or through the Bawaii (Captain Cook) car park and rest area. Confirm live. Do not improvise a closed cut because “the beach is just there.”

This is a cottage/beach-cut issue. The signed clifftop loop is a different product — the walking-track page itself had no current track-specific alerts on 14 Sep 2026, and you still re-check the morning you go.

Loop from the east

NPWS: 3.7 km Grade 3 loop, 1–3 hours, multiple access points. From Bawaii you are still on the same signed circuit toward the lighthouse. Expect steps, exposure and crowds on weekends. Stick to the track. Stay off cliff edges.

Shorter is allowed: walk a section to the lighthouse and reverse, or continue to The Pass / Wategos if that is where you can legally finish. Do not start this as a “quick 20 minutes” from a lighthouse-car-park ticket you already burned.

Trail page: Walgun Cape Byron walking track. Pair with loop-and-lighthouse itinerary. Last town for fuel, food and medical is still Byron Bay — not the lookout.

FAQ — Bawaii / Tallow

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Can I leave the car at Bawaii and walk the full loop?

Yes as a plan — you still pay hourly at that node for as long as the car sits. Budget 1–3 hours walking plus buffer, or walk from town. Confirm live fees. Reverse to this node or continue to a start you can legally finish at.

Is Bawaii free with an annual pass?

NPWS lists $5 per vehicle/motorcycle per hour at Bawaii, Cosy Corner and The Pass. That is a different table from the 1-hour cap on the lighthouse car park. Confirm live. Walk-in avoids the vehicle charge. Do not treat this node as free all-day parking.

Is Tallow Beach a campground here?

No. There is no conventional campground on this SCA. Heritage cottages are NPWS only. Tallow is a nearby beach name on NPWS “also see” lists, not a Park Stay product on this site. Sleep in Byron town or book cottages officially.

Is this the best whale lookout?

It is a legal clifftop with a $5 hourly clock if you drove — better than burning the lighthouse-car-park hour while you wait. Sightings are not guaranteed. Confirm season notes (Wild About Whales vs Info Centre dates). Stay off cliff edges. Licensed boats are a different product on Tours.

Can I get to Clarkes Beach from here?

NPWS says yes while cottage beach cuts are closed: Clarkes Beach via Brooke Drive and The Pass, or through the Bawaii (Captain Cook) car park and rest area. Confirm live. Do not use the closed Mildenhall–Imeson or Partridge cuts.
