The Pass & Wategos
Guide updated · SCA precinct — verify live with NSW National Parks
Beach starts for the 3.7 km loop, surf context, The Pass Café as a place-name — not a second beach-guide website. $5/hour parking at The Pass (confirm live). Named Plan B when the lighthouse car park is full.
- Best for: Starting the loop without the 1-hour cap on the lighthouse car park; swim only if patrolled
- Time: Half-day if you add the loop; 1–2 hours if you only look and leave
- The Pass / Cosy Corner: $5 per vehicle/motorcycle per hour (NPWS, confirm live). Walk-from-town still wins if you want time.

Why start here instead of the lighthouse car park
The Pass and Wategos are how many people enter the 3.7 km loop without burning the 1-hour cap on the lighthouse car park. They are also popular surf and swim nodes. This guide treats them as starts and bail-outs, not as a beach empire.
If the lighthouse car park is already a queue, this is a named Plan B — not a creative parking job on vegetation or access. Pay the hourly node, walk from town, or reverse to a start you can legally finish at.
A look-and-leave hour is a complete product. Adding the full loop is a half-day. Stacking a surf session, the loop, and a lighthouse café lunch is how the clock and the café listing both fail you. Deep guide: Plan B when the lighthouse car park is full article.
Starts, reverse and the clock
NPWS: the walking track can be accessed at numerous points and walked in shorter sections. Practical here: The Pass, Cosy Corner, Wategos. Reverse to the node you can legally return to. If you drove, your reverse clock is the pay machine, not sunset.
Palm Valley Currenbah is a separate signed walk in this SCA — confirm grade and distance on the official page. Do not assume it is the 3.7 km loop under another name, and do not invent an Arakwal National Park circuit as part of this reserve.
Walk-from-town still skips the vehicle charge. Lighthouse Road, Brooke Drive and the beach corridor are the obvious approaches; allow extra time, water, and the honesty that sand + steps is slower than a town footpath. Trail page: Walgun Cape Byron walking track.
The Pass midden — look, do not invent
NPWS records The Pass midden as a conservation program with Aboriginal community partners. Do not disturb cultural material. Do not invent stories or ceremony. This site does not speak for Traditional Owners.
Stay on the signed track. Vegetation and dune faces are not a photography set. If a tour is licensed on the official SCA page, that is the cultural product — not a blog paragraph.
Tours hub on this site is optional commercial next steps after you have read the official page. Point to NPWS and Arakwal Corporation for wording.
Cottage beach cuts (current alert)
NPWS (checked 14 Sep 2026): coastal erosion has cut a dangerous drop-off in the foredune in front of the cottages. Beach access tracks between Mildenhall Cottage and Imeson Cottage, and from Partridge Cottage, are closed until further notice.
Access to Clarkes Beach is via Brooke Drive and The Pass, or through Bawaii (Captain Cook). Confirm live. This is a cottage/beach-cut issue, not a closure of the signed clifftop loop — still check the walking-track alerts the morning you go.
Do not improvise a “shortcut from the cottages.” The alert exists because the drop-off is dangerous. Stay hub and the official alerts page are the live check, not a screenshot from last year.
Swim only if patrolled — this is not a surf site
The Pass and Wategos sit in a busy surf landscape. This guide will not become a second surf website. If you swim, use patrolled times and accept ocean risk. Rips, dumpers and changing swell are not “Byron being dramatic” — they are the water.
Cape Byron Marine Park is adjacent. Its rules are not this SCA’s job and we do not publish a fish/spear table. Check official marine-park sources if that is why you came.
The Pass Café is a place-name for orientation. Hours, menus and closures are the operator’s, not NPWS park entry. Do not treat a café as a park facility or as an itinerary promise on a closed-alert morning.

Itineraries that use this area
Half day (about 2–4 hours on the headland)
Loop + lighthouse (half day)
Walk-from-town or park at The Pass / Bawaii on an hourly clock you can actually afford. Do the signed 3.7 km loop. Lighthouse is a stop, not the whole day. Do not drive to the lighthouse car park for this shape.
2–3 hours doors-to-doors in Byron
Sunrise walk-in from town
Walk or cycle from Byron to the lighthouse for first light. No vehicle fee. No 1-hour cap. Stairs and a dark start are the cost. Linger at the marker; reverse to town or continue a loop section only if legs allow.

FAQ — The Pass / Wategos
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Is The Pass cheaper than the lighthouse car park?
NPWS lists $5/hour at The Pass / Cosy Corner / Bawaii vs $10/hour on the lighthouse precinct — and the lighthouse car park has the 1-hour daily cap. Confirm live. Walk-in avoids both. The cheaper hourly node still has a clock if you drove.
Can I leave the car here and walk to the lighthouse?
Yes as a plan. You still pay hourly at that node for as long as the car sits. Budget the hours for a 1–3 hour loop plus buffer, or walk from town. Confirm live fees on the official SCA page.
Is this Arakwal National Park?
No. This SCA sits next to Arakwal National Park. We do not build that reserve here. Dual name on this headland is Walgun / Cape Byron. Palm Valley Currenbah is a separate signed walk in this SCA — confirm on NPWS; it is not the 3.7 km loop under another name.
Can I use the cottage beach tracks?
NPWS: those cuts between Mildenhall and Imeson, and from Partridge, are closed until further notice for an erosion drop-off (checked 14 Sep 2026). Use Brooke Drive and The Pass, or Bawaii, for Clarkes Beach. Confirm live. Do not improvise a shortcut.
Is The Pass Café part of the park?
It is a place-name next to a start. Hours and menus are the operator’s. Cape Byron Lighthouse Café on the lighthouse car park is a different listing and was on a closed-area alert from 31 May 2026 — confirm live. Neither is NPWS park entry.
Other precincts on this SCA
Same small headland, different clock. Open the start that matches parking — do not treat adjacent Arakwal National Park or the Marine Park as this reserve.
Lighthouse precinct
Best for: Postcard lighthouse, marker, museum hours, a tight clock if you drove
Cape Byron Lighthouse, lighthouse car park, most-easterly marker, Information Centre and heritage cottages. The 1-hour vehicle cap is the operator fact — walk-in if you want to linger.
Bawaii & Tallow side
Best for: Captain Cook Lookout start, whale-season clifftop, overflow when the lighthouse car park is ugly
Captain Cook Lookout / Bawaii rest area ($5/hour, confirm live) and Tallow Beach as a nearby swim/surf name — not a second park. Eastern-side start for the loop and the better whale wait if you drove.
