Where to stay near Walgun Cape Byron

There is no conventional campground on this SCA. Heritage keepers’ cottages are official NPWS bookings only — never a Booking.com or CJ product. Most visitors sleep in Byron Bay town.

Some stay, tour and gear links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Parking fees and official NPWS cottage bookings are never affiliated.

Official NPWS cottages

Assistant Lighthouse Keepers’ Cottages and other NPWS stays listed on the official SCA page. Book only on NSW National Parks. We never affiliate those bookings.

Beach access from several cottages is closed on the NPWS alerts page (checked 14 Sep 2026): erosion drop-off in the foredune. Tracks between Mildenhall Cottage and Imeson Cottage, and from Partridge Cottage, are closed until further notice. Clarkes Beach access is via Brooke Drive and The Pass, or Bawaii (Captain Cook). Confirm live before you book a cottage for a beach stay.

Tours & gear around your stay

Guided tours

Optional — lighthouse sunrise, cultural walks, or a Gold Coast coach day. Confirm inclusions.

A tour does not replace checking NSW National Parks alerts, weather, or cliff safety yourself.

What to bring

Practical kit for a windy headland: sun, water, grip, binoculars in whale season

  • Sun hat + high SPFClifftop grassland and the lighthouse precinct have little shade. UV is the default, not an exception.
  • Drinking water bottleCarry water even for a “quick lighthouse photo.” Café hours are not a hydration plan — Cape Café was flagged closed until further notice from 31 May 2026 (confirm live).
  • Grip shoesGrade 3 loop has steps, beach sand and clifftop track. Thongs fail on wet stairs.
  • Binoculars (whale season)May–October/November whale window on NPWS Wild About Whales. Confirm current season notes before you pack.
  • Light wind layerThe most-easterly lighthouse precinct is windy. A town T-shirt is often not enough at dawn.
  • Day pack 15–20 LWater, hat, layers, phone. Walk-from-town means you are not popping back to the car in 10 minutes.
