Walks & lookouts
Guide updated · grades and open status change — verify NSW National Parks
Start with a clear walk-in vs drive decision. Three signed products, not a 40-walk catalogue. The 3.7 km Grade 3 loop is the signature circuit; the lighthouse precinct is the postcard; Palm Valley Currenbah is the shorter signed option. Distances, grades and times below are planning ranges — always confirm on the official walking-track page and park alerts. Stick to the track. Stay off cliff edges. No tour wall on trail pages.
Decide before you lace up
- Easy precinct: lighthouse lawn car park paths, marker, Information Centre — high reward, 1-hour vehicle cap if you drove.
- Moderate loop: 3.7 km Grade 3 — steps, beach, grassland, clifftops. Walk-in or a $5 hourly node. Not a 1-hour lighthouse-car-park ticket.
- Shorter signed option: Palm Valley Currenbah — confirm grade and distance on NPWS. Not the loop under another name.
Stacking the loop plus hinterland waterfalls plus a lighthouse-car-park café lunch is the classic failure. Pick the table row that matches the parking clock, then open the full trail guide for getting-there detail.

Quick comparison (planning only)
Fees are a 14 Sep 2026 NPWS snapshot — confirm live. Walk-in from Byron skips the vehicle charge at every node.
| Walk / lookout | Effort | Time | Best for | Parking catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3.7 km loop | moderate | 1–3 hours (NPWS suggested; allow ~2 hours to do it properly) | The signature headland morning — rainforest, beach, grassland, lighthouse | Park entry fees apply at vehicle nodes. Walk-in / cycle-in avoids the hourly vehicle charge. Lawn is 1 hour/day even with an NPWS annual pass — confirm live. |
| Lighthouse lawn car park | easy | 60–90 minutes if you drive (1-hour vehicle cap); longer if you walk in | Lighthouse photos, most-easterly point, Information Centre — a tight parking clock if you drive | 1-hour lighthouse-car-park rule includes NPWS annual passholders. Confirm live. |
| Palm Valley | easy | Short section — confirm live | A gentler signed section when the full loop is too much | Vehicle fees depend on the node you parked at. Walk-in avoids the charge. Confirm live. |

Walk FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
What is the signature walk?
Walgun Cape Byron walking track — NPWS 3.7 km loop, Grade 3, 1–3 hours suggested (they also say you will want a good two hours). Multiple starts. Confirm live. Walk-in or a $5 hourly node (The Pass / Cosy Corner / Bawaii). Do not use the 1-hour lighthouse-car-park ticket for the full loop, including if you hold an NPWS annual pass.
Is there a hard wilderness walk?
No. This is a headland circuit next to Byron Bay town, not a 3-day national-park itinerary. NPWS lists accessibility on the official loop page as hard in the terrain sense (steps, steep pinches) — not a remote multi-day.
Can I do the loop if I parked in the lighthouse car park?
Not as an honest plan. The lighthouse lawn car park is $10/hour cars / $4 motorcycles with a maximum 1 hour per vehicle per calendar day, including annual-pass holders (NPWS, confirm live). Treat a driven stop there as the precinct only. Start the loop from town, The Pass, Wategos or Bawaii.
Is Palm Valley Currenbah the same as the 3.7 km loop?
No. NPWS lists it as a separate signed walking track in this SCA. Confirm distance and grade on the official Palm Valley page — this guide does not invent metres. Use it as the gentler signed option when the full loop is too much.
