Cape Byron Lighthouse precinct
Guide updated · verify live track status with NSW National Parks
The postcard stop: Cape Byron Lighthouse, lawn car park, most-easterly marker, Information Centre and museum hours. Drive it only if one hour is enough. Walk-in if you want to linger.
Do not pair: Do not add a 3-hour loop to a 1-hour lighthouse-car-park ticket.
Turnaround: When the hour is up, leave the vehicle precinct. Walkers can stay.
- Treating the annual pass as all-day parking.
- Arriving at 11am in January and circling for a space in the lighthouse car park that does not exist.
- Mostly formed precinct paths (confirm accessibility on NPWS)
- 60–90 minutes if you drive (1-hour vehicle cap); longer if you walk in
- Short paths around the lighthouse car park, lighthouse and most-easterly marker
- Effort: easy
- Best for: Lighthouse photos, most-easterly point, Information Centre — a tight parking clock if you drive
Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on NSW National Parks before you go.

Where you start
Lighthouse precinct / 199 Lighthouse Road
This is a lookout and heritage precinct, not a remote trailhead. You start at the lighthouse car park under Cape Byron Lighthouse. Information Centre at 199 Lighthouse Road, Byron Bay NSW 2481. Confirm parking machines, toilets and any temporary barriers on the day.
How to get there
- Walk or cycle from Byron Bay town — no vehicle fee. Lighthouse Road is the obvious climb (~2 km from town). Allow water and extra time.
- Drive: $10/vehicle/hour in the lighthouse car park, motorcycles $4/hour, max 1 hour per vehicle per calendar day including annual-pass holders (NPWS, confirm live).
- Coach rates are listed separately on the official park page. Do not assume a tour bus ticket is your car’s lighthouse-car-park hour.
- If the lighthouse car park is full, do not circle and invent a verge. Named Plan B is The Pass, Wategos or Bawaii — or skip the drive.
How to do it (step by step)
- If driving: pay, photograph, marker, Information Centre if open, leave. Do not start the 3.7 km loop on a 1-hour ticket.
- Lawn open 8am–sunset (confirm live). Maritime Museum 10am–4pm daily. Information Centre 9.30am–4.30pm daily, closed Christmas Day.
- Guided lighthouse / museum tours: limited days — phone 02 6639 8300 (official Information Centre). We do not publish a mailbox.
- Stay behind barriers and off cliff edges. Wind on the lighthouse precinct is colder than Byron streets.
- When the hour is up, leave the vehicle precinct. Walkers can stay. Town food is the reset — Cape Café was on a closed-area alert from 31 May 2026 (confirm live).
What to expect
A working lighthouse on a crowded headland, heritage cottages (NPWS booking only), an Information Centre, and a marker for the most easterly point of mainland Australia. It is busy because it is easy to sell on Instagram.
This is primarily a lookout and precinct experience, not the 3.7 km loop. Paths are generally formed, but it can still feel cold and windy on the lighthouse car park when town is warm.
Hours and fees are on the official SCA and lighthouse pages. This site copies them as a dated snapshot (14 Sep 2026), not as live law.
The parking clock is the product
Maximum 1 hour per vehicle per calendar day in the lighthouse car park, including annual-pass holders. That is the operator fact here — it is not a typical NSW day-pass. Plan around it or walk in.
Walk-in or cycle-in from Byron skips the vehicle charge. Driving is a sample ticket: pay, photograph, Information Centre if open, leave.
Success is one clear lighthouse stop. Failure is treating the annual pass as all-day parking, or starting the loop on that ticket. Deep guide: parking-one-hour-rule article.
Hours, museum, café — three clocks
SCA listed Open unless closed for weather or fire. Lawn 8am–sunset. Museum 10am–4pm. Information Centre 9.30am–4.30pm daily, closed Christmas Day. Early opening for events or disabled access is a prior-notice NPWS Byron arrangement (02 6639 8300).
The museum in the former keeper’s office is not the same product as a climb of the tower. Do not assume every outbuilding is a public tour.
Cape Byron Lighthouse Café is a separate listing. NPWS had it closed until further notice from 31 May 2026 (listing also shows an apply-to window through 26 Feb 2027). Recheck alerts. Carry water.
Crowds & time of day
Fine weekends and school holidays fill the lighthouse car park early. An 11:30 arrival on a sunny Saturday is still a valid visit if you walked in or named Plan B — it is a bad visit if you expected an empty headland and all-day parking.
If the lot is full, cap the hunt (about ten minutes), then The Pass, Wategos or Bawaii — see the article for when the lighthouse car park is full. Do not invent verge parking.
What to pair (and what not to)
Strong pairs if you walked in: the 3.7 km loop, or a shorter signed section (Palm Valley Currenbah — confirm live). Weak pairs: adding the full loop to a 1-hour lighthouse-car-park ticket, or stacking hinterland waterfalls after this.
Overnight is Byron town or official NPWS cottages. Cottage beach cuts were on a current erosion alert (Mildenhall–Imeson and Partridge closed) when we checked 14 Sep 2026 — confirm live on Stay. This precinct walk is not a beach-cut.
Packing list (shell, grip, water) lives on the gear hub— not as a merch wall on every walk. Pairing and Plan B: plan your visit · 1-hour lighthouse car park Plan B.

Extra tips
- Most-easterly point of the Australian mainland is why people search this stop. If you drove, you still have a 1-hour cap on the lighthouse car park.
- Whale season: look from the clifftop with binoculars; do not crowd cliff edges. Confirm Wild About Whales.
- Screenshot the 1-hour rule; arguing with the machine wastes the hour.
- Heritage cottages are NPWS booking only — not this walk, not Booking.com.

Other signed walks on this SCA
Three products, not a wilderness catalogue. Match the start to the parking clock — do not stack hinterland after this.
moderate · 1–3 hours (NPWS suggested; allow ~2 hours to do it properly)
Walgun Cape Byron walking track
The NPWS 3.7 km Grade 3 loop through bangalow palms and burrawangs, kangaroo grassland, beach and clifftops to Cape Byron Lighthouse. Multiple access points. Parking is the usual failure, not fitness.

Palm Valley Currenbah walking track
NPWS lists Palm Valley Currenbah as a separate walking track in this SCA. Use it as a shorter option. Do not invent distance. Confirm the official page.
