Walgun Cape Byron walking track
Guide updated · verify live track status with NSW National Parks
The NPWS 3.7 km Grade 3 loop through bangalow palms and burrawangs, kangaroo grassland, beach and clifftops to Cape Byron Lighthouse. Multiple access points. Parking is the usual failure, not fitness.
Do not pair: Do not stack this loop with a hinterland waterfall farm, Nightcap, or a “day 2 national park itinerary.” Overnight is Byron town (or official NPWS cottages).
Turnaround: If anyone is done at the lighthouse lawn car park, that is a complete visit. Reverse the way you came. The loop is optional.
- Driving to the lighthouse car park for a 3-hour loop and getting booked for overstaying the 1-hour cap.
- Starting at midday in school holidays with no Plan B when The Pass and the lighthouse car park are both full.
- Grade 3 — formed track, steps, some steep sections
- 1–3 hours (NPWS suggested; allow ~2 hours to do it properly)
- 3.7 km loop
- Effort: moderate
- Best for: The signature headland morning — rainforest, beach, grassland, lighthouse
Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on NSW National Parks before you go.

Where you start
Several signed starts
Lighthouse precinct, Captain Cook Lookout / Bawaii, The Pass, Wategos — pick the start that matches your parking clock or walk-from-town. There is no single “must start here” gate. Confirm arrows on official maps and on-site signs.
How to get there
- Walk or cycle from Byron Bay town and you skip vehicle fees. Lighthouse Road is the obvious climb; allow extra time and water. Town footpath pace is not loop pace.
- Drive to the lighthouse lawn car park only if you accept a 1-hour vehicle cap ($10/hour cars, $4/hour motorcycles — confirm live), including annual-pass holders. That ticket is the precinct, not this loop.
- The Pass / Cosy Corner / Bawaii: $5/hour vehicles and motorcycles (confirm live). Useful if the lighthouse car park is full or you want a beach-side start you can actually sit through.
- Do not invent verge parking on vegetation or access. Named Plan B is The Pass, Wategos or Bawaii — see the article for when the lighthouse car park is full.
How to do it (step by step)
- Decide walk-in vs drive before you leave the last coffee. Do not discover the 1-hour lighthouse-car-park rule on the pay machine.
- If you drive to the lighthouse car park, treat the lighthouse, most-easterly marker and Information Centre as a 60-minute precinct, then leave the car and walk — or do not drive at all.
- Walking the full loop: expect steps, beach sand, clifftop exposure and crowds on weekends. Stick to the track. Stay off cliff edges.
- Shorter: drop in at Wategos, The Pass or Captain Cook Lookout and walk a section to the lighthouse, then reverse or continue if the clock allows.
- Turn around if weather, energy or the parking clock fails. Bail-out is reverse to the node you can legally return to — there is no wilderness extraction.
What to expect
NPWS describes rainforest, beach, grassland and clifftops to the lighthouse, with bangalow palms, burrawangs, and a chance of turtles, dolphins, stingrays and seasonal whales. That is a coastal headland circuit next to a busy town — not a remote multi-day.
Suggested time 1–3 hours; they also say you will want a good two hours. Grade 3. Accessibility listed as hard on the official page. Distance 3.7 km loop. Confirm all of that on the walking-track page the morning you go.
Crowds on weekends are part of the product. You will share steps and lookouts. That is still a successful Walgun morning if the parking clock was honest.
Starts, bail-outs and reverse
Official notes: the track can be accessed at numerous points and walked in shorter sections. Practical starts: lighthouse precinct (only if you already paid the lighthouse car-park clock or walked in), Captain Cook Lookout / Bawaii, The Pass, Wategos.
Bail-out is usually “turn around and walk back to the node you can actually return to.” If you drove, your reverse clock is the parking machine, not sunset.
Palm Valley Currenbah is a separate signed walk in this SCA — not this loop under another name. Confirm it on its own official page.
The parking clock is the usual failure
NPWS (re-checked 14 Sep 2026): lighthouse lawn car park $10/hour cars / $4 motorcycles, maximum 1 hour per vehicle per calendar day including annual-pass holders. The Pass / Cosy Corner / Bawaii: $5/hour. Walk-in skips the vehicle charge.
Success is matching start to clock. Failure is treating the annual pass as all-day parking in the lighthouse car park, or starting this loop on that ticket. Deep guide: 1-hour parking-rule article. Table: Plan your visit.
If the lighthouse car park is already a queue, do not invent a verge. Named Plan B: The Pass, Wategos, Bawaii — article for when the lighthouse car park is full.
Hazards that actually matter here
Cliffs, heat, crowds, and the parking clock. Skip crocodile / 4WD / alpine snow theatre. Stick to the track. After rain, stairs get slick.
Stay off cliff edges for whale or Instagram zooms. Cottage beach cuts (Mildenhall–Imeson and Partridge) were on a current erosion alert when we checked 14 Sep 2026 — that is not this clifftop loop, and you still do not improvise a closed cut.
This is not walked for this URL. Signed grade, distance and closures beat any blog timer, including ours.
What to pair (and what not to)
Strong pairs: lighthouse precinct if you walked in; a lookout stop at Bawaii if you drove the $5 node; Byron town food after. Weak pairs: hinterland waterfalls, Nightcap, or a café sit at the lighthouse precinct while Cape Café is on a closed-area listing.
One honest loop (or one honest precinct) beats three rushed stops. Overnight is Byron town or official NPWS cottages — never a conventional campground on this SCA.
Packing list (shell, grip, water) lives on the gear hub— not as a merch wall on every walk. Pairing and Plan B: plan your visit · 1-hour lighthouse car park Plan B.

Extra tips
- NPWS: take water, hat, sunscreen; binoculars in whale season (typically May–November — confirm Wild About Whales; Info Centre copy also says May–October).
- Busy weekends: parking is limited. Walk-from-town is the Plan A, not the backup.
- Cape Café: NPWS closed-area alert until further notice from 31 May 2026. Do not plan lunch around it. Byron town is the food reset.
- The signed 3.7 km loop itself had no current track-specific alerts on 14 Sep 2026. Cottage beach access is a separate SCA safety alert — not the clifftop loop. Recheck both.
- After rain, stairs get slick. Slow down. This page is not a field-walk diary.
Often paired with Lighthouse lawn car park— only if energy and weather allow.
