Walgun Cape Byron is an NPWS State Conservation Area, not a national park — dual name Walgun (Bundjalung / Arakwal, often glossed as “shoulder”) / Cape Byron. A good visit is logistics plus restraint: decide walk-in vs drive before you leave town, treat the lighthouse car park as a 1-hour ticket if you drove (annual pass included), and verify fees, hours and alerts with NSW National Parks. This is a morning or half-day next to Byron Bay — not a 3-day wilderness.

Cottage beach access closed — erosion drop-off. NPWS safety alert (applies from 18 Feb 2026, last reviewed 4 Aug 2026): coastal erosion has cut a dangerous drop-off in the foredune in front of the cottages. Beach access tracks between Mildenhall Cottage and Imeson Cottage, and from Partridge Cottage, are closed until further notice. Access to Clarkes Beach is via Brooke Drive and The Pass, or through the Bawaii (Captain Cook) car park and rest area. Confirm live.
Cape Byron Lighthouse Café closed. NPWS closed-area alert: Cape Byron Lighthouse Café closed until further notice from Sunday 31 May 2026 (listing also shows an apply-to window through 26 Feb 2027). Do not plan lunch at the lighthouse precinct around that listing. Recheck NPWS.

Best for: A lighthouse morning, most-easterly marker, and a 3.7 km Grade 3 coastal loop next to Byron Bay.
Skip if: You need a 3-day wilderness, all-day parking in the lighthouse car park with an annual pass, a conventional campground, or a national-park label.
Time needed: 60–90 min precinct if you drive; half day for the loop; overnight in Byron town — not a campground here.
Dogs: Follow NPWS rules for this SCA. Do not assume town streets = the headland.
Kids: Precinct: yes with cliff supervision. Full loop: steps and exposure — selective. Palm Valley Currenbah may be gentler (confirm live).

Pick a morning shape (before you leave Byron)

Most wrecked visits are not “bad weather” — they are a lighthouse-car-park ticket plus a loop, a café lunch that is listed closed, or a Gold Coast day-trip that still hits the 1-hour cap. Choose the shape that matches the parking clock, then open the matching itinerary. You can always do less on the ground; you cannot invent a second hour in the lighthouse car park.

How long do I need?

This is a headland morning / half-day next to town. People who should not treat it as a 3-day national-park itinerary: anyone packing hinterland waterfalls, Nightcap, or walk-up camping. Overnight is Byron Bay town (or official NPWS cottages).

When to go

There is no single best month — only trade-offs between crowds, wind, UV and (in season) whales. The lighthouse car park is busy because it is easy to sell. Weekday mornings are kinder than school-holiday noon.

Hours (confirm live): lighthouse lawn car park 8am–sunset; museum 10am–4pm daily; Information Centre 9.30am–4.30pm daily, closed Christmas Day. Early opening for events or disabled access is a prior-notice NPWS Byron arrangement (02 6639 8300).
Weekends and school holidays: treat the lighthouse car park as a negotiation. Arrive walking, or name Plan B (The Pass / Wategos / Bawaii) before you leave town.
Whale window: Wild About Whales often says May–November; the Information Centre page has also said May to October. Confirm both. Sightings are a bonus. Do not wait on a 1-hour lighthouse-car-park ticket.
Wind and UV: grassland and the lighthouse precinct have little shade. A town T-shirt morning is still a hat-and-layer morning on the cape.
After rain: stairs on the loop get slick. Prefer the precinct until grip and energy are honest.

A. Lighthouse lawn car park

$10 per vehicle per hour / $4 per hour motorcycles. Maximum 1 hour per vehicle per calendar day, including all NPWS annual passholders. Lawn open 8am to sunset (confirm live).

B. The Pass / Cosy Corner / Bawaii

$5 per vehicle/motorcycle per hour. Tap-and-pay at machines. Cash and cards also at the Information Centre when open. Better node if you insist on driving a loop.

C. Walk-in

Walk or cycle from Byron: no vehicle fee. Coach rates are on the official page. Annual pass: pass.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au does not waive the 1-hour cap on the lighthouse car park.

Camping & cottages

There is no conventional campground on this SCA. Heritage keepers’ cottages book only on NPWS. This site never affiliates them. Most visitors sleep in Byron Bay town — see Stay.

Crowds & a full lighthouse car park

Fine weekends and school holidays fill the lighthouse car park early. An 11:30 arrival on a sunny Saturday is still a valid visit if you walked in or named Plan B — it is a bad visit if you expected an empty headland and all-day parking.

Cap the hunt at about ten minutes. Then The Pass, Wategos, Bawaii, or reverse to town.
Do not park on vegetation or block access.
Shared loop: steps, bikes, joggers, coaches at the precinct. Stick to the signed track.
Stay off cliff edges for whale or phone zooms.

Getting there — walk vs drive

Byron Bay town is the last stop for fuel, food and medical. The headland is a short hop — about two kilometres and a real climb on Lighthouse Road. Gold Coast / Brisbane days still hit the same parking clock.

Walk or cycle from town — Plan A for anyone who wants more than an hour.
Drive to 199 Lighthouse Road only for a 60-minute precinct.
The Pass, Wategos and Bawaii / Captain Cook Lookout are named loop starts if you drove or the lighthouse car park is full.
Do not invent verge parking on Lighthouse Road.

Is there an entry fee?

Hourly vehicle parking at signed nodes — not a single park ticket. Lawn and Information Centre: $10 per vehicle per hour, motorcycles $4, maximum 1 hour per vehicle per calendar day including NPWS annual passholders. The Pass / Cosy Corner / Bawaii: $5 per hour. Walk-in or cycle-in skips the vehicle charge. Confirm live on NPWS. We never sell parking.

Does an NPWS annual pass cover all-day parking in the lighthouse car park?

No. NPWS says the 1-hour maximum includes annual passholders. Confirm live. If you want more than an hour, walk from town or use a $5 hourly node.

Can I camp?

No conventional campground. Heritage keepers’ cottages are official NPWS bookings only. Overnight for most visitors is Byron Bay town. Cottage beach cuts were on a current erosion alert when we checked 27 Aug 2026 — confirm live on Stay.

Are dogs allowed?

Do not assume Byron streets equal this reserve. Follow current NSW National Parks rules for Walgun Cape Byron SCA. Assistance animals follow official policy — verify on NPWS.

How long from Byron? From Brisbane or the Gold Coast?

From Byron town: walk or a very short drive. Gold Coast / Brisbane are separate day-trips with a real highway clock — if you try them, you still face the 1-hour cap on the lighthouse car park unless you walk in. Sleep in Byron if you want a calm morning.

Can I do the 3.7 km loop if I parked in the lighthouse car park?

Not as an honest plan. NPWS suggests 1–3 hours for the loop (and says you will want a good two hours). The lighthouse-car-park ticket is 60 minutes. Walk in, or park at The Pass / Bawaii on an hourly clock.

What if the lighthouse lawn car park is full?

Cap the hunt at about ten minutes. Walk from town, or start at The Pass, Wategos or Bawaii. Do not verge-park. See the article for when the lighthouse car park is full.

Is the lighthouse café open?

NPWS listed Cape Byron Lighthouse Café closed until further notice from 31 May 2026 (listing also shows an apply-to window through 26 Feb 2027). Recheck alerts. Carry water. Byron town is the food reset.

Is this a national park?

No. Walgun Cape Byron is an NPWS State Conservation Area. Adjacent Arakwal National Park and Cape Byron Marine Park are other reserves. This guide does not treat them as the same place.
